    Press Quotes

“EIGHT DAYS (BACKWARDS) is a breezy, psychologically precise and pleasantly dizzying ninety-minute set of interlocking New York sketches about power, relationships and the unknowable agonies of fate. Jeremy Dobrish, who usually writes for his own adobe theater company, has created a series of light but sharply observed snapshots that, as the title says, work backward over eight days in the lives of eighteen casually and/or intimately related character … this is a summer show-jaunty and clever enough to hit a few truths with impressive economy and a sense of possibility. The characters have a range of class and age and, ultimately, we care enough about them to wish we could wan their future selves about what we know is ahead.” —Linda Winer, Newsday

    • Jeremy Dobrish

Jeremy Dobrish is a stage director, playwright, artistic leader, and teacher whose main focus has been developing and directing new plays and musicals. As a New York City based director, Jeremy has directed at Second Stage, MCC, Amas, WPA, Joe's Pub, The Westside Arts, The Promenade, The Variety Arts, The Century, Actor's Playhouse, Soho Playhouse, Zipper, etc. His productions have received several Lortel and Drama Desk nominations, and the New York Times has described his directing as "Adroit, Canny, Comic, Funny, Gleeful, Ingenious, and at Double Espresso Speed." Jeremy has directed at all of the major New York festivals, including NYMF, SPF and the Fringe, where his productions have received multiple festival awards including, most recently, the NYMF award for exceptional direction. Regionally, Jeremy has directed at The Old Globe, Barrington Stage, North Shore, The O'Neill, New York Stage and Film, Goodspeed, and The Village Theatre. His adaptation of CURIOUS GEORGE and his productions of THE TEACHER FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, VIRTUALLY ME, and PAUL REVERE tour the country with Theatreworks USA. Jeremy is a seven-time published playwright whose plays have been described by the New York Times as "Delightfully Theatrical, A Gleeful Romp, and Stylishly Daffy." His plays have been produced across the country, and in New York most notably at the Atlantic and Vineyard theatres. Jeremy began his career as the founder and Artistic Director of the aesthetically innovative adobe theatre company which he ran for thirteen years, and where he directed and/or produced over twenty productions. Adobe moved several shows Off-Broadway and was called "One of the canniest theatre companies anywhere in town" by the New York Times who went on to conclude that adobe's work "often seems as crisp as a freshly ironed shirt" due to "acting based on a mathematical precision of detail and a restrained stagecraft." Since adobe, Jeremy has served as an Artistic Associate at Second Stage, and recently he co-founded Midtown Direct Rep, a theatre company in Maplewood, NJ, where he lives, dedicated to bringing the Broadway talents of his community to his community. As a teacher, Jeremy currently serves on the faculty of NYU. He has taught playwriting, directing and acting at Juilliard, The National Theatre Institute, the New York Film Academy, Fordham, Washington Irving High School, and in Prague through Western Michigan University. Jeremy is a member of the Dramatists Guild and SDC. He is represented by Paradigm.

    Play Description

A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the deathbed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat, and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life — the great mystery.

In this unabashedly sentimental comedy, a cat named Samantha has just started living with a guy named Shuman who she believes is her true love. At first everything seems to be going great. Samantha can't get enough of Shuman, and she can't get enough of him. But soon Samantha realizes that Shuman doesn't always seem to understand her. Worse yet, Shuman doesn't always seem all that interested in trying to understand her. Things become truly problematic when one night Oscar, a sexy alley cat, shows up at the door. Suddenly Samantha begins to wonder whether she's an indoor or an outdoor cat. To make matters more complicated, a quirky aspiring cat therapist named Matilda inserts herself into the mix, thinking she can solve everyone's problems but only seems to make things worse. Eventually Samantha finds herself on a journey, both physical and emotional, that leads her to discover what having a home and being loved really mean to her. INDOOR/OUTDOOR is an allegory about the difficulties and joys of all manner of relationships.

Unmarried cousins Eleanor and Lolly have inherited from their recently deceased aunt a historical house on the windswept Massachusetts coast. Only thing is, the place is haunted by the handsome young ghost of a swashbuckling 19-century smuggler who was hanged for his crimes. The local minister, Mr Butts, finds it all unbearably romantic. Eleanor, a worldly woman, is skeptical of the ghost’s existence, but spinsterish Lolly claims he visits her at night, and they’ve fallen in love. Has Lolly, Eleanor wonders, lost her mind? Moreover, how could the ghost possibly prefer Lolly to her? As the ghost continues his visitations, his reasons for the haunting are gradually revealed, and not only Lolly but even Eleanor and Mr Butts begin to fall under his spell, the surprising consequences of which may just land all three of them in jail in this delightful and otherworldly romantic comedy.
