    Press Quotes

“The time is the early 1920s and the place is an isolated Italian villa, but it might as well be the 12th century. The master of the house bumped his head twenty years ago during a costume ball and has since believed himself to be King Enrico IV of Germany. As the play goes on, perception, reality, fantasy and freedom become confused … an effective new adaptation by Richard Nelson.” —Chad Jones, The Oakland Tribune

“ENRICO IV is about a man who deliberately chooses to dwell in the rich fantasy life of his madness even after he regains his sanity. Pirandello’s finely strung paradox probes the issue of what self-concept qualifies as sane. Richard Nelson’s beautifully translated script paired with Pirandello’s priceless insight into self-image and delusion … make this truly an evening of epiphany.” —Pamela Fisher, San Francisco Examiner

“A sparkling new translation.” —Pat Craig, San Francisco Times

    The Servant of Two Masters
Carlo Goldoni, adapted by Constance Congdon
    $15.00–$15.95

    Play Description

Goldoni's eighteenth-century masterpiece is an enduring story of love, passion, and mistaken identity. Young Venetian Clarice can't marry her lover, Silvio. She had been betrothed to Rasponi, who appears to have returned from the dead to claim her. But the Rasponi who appears is actually Beatrice, Rasponi's sister who is in disguise as her brother and has come to Venice to find her suitor, Florinda. Complications arise when a servant greedily seeks employment with both the disguised Beatrice and Florinda and spends the rest of the play trying to serve two masters while keeping the two unaware of the other's presence. The play is based on the Italian Renaissance theater style, Commedia dell arte, and reinvigorated the genre, which is so heavily based on carnival, while bringing to it an element of realism, mishaps, mix-ups, confusions, disguises and mistaken identity that come with the style.

    Play Description

When Thomas D’Angelo pays a long overdue visit to his Italian grandparents, he soon finds himself caught in the middle of the ongoing, if farcical, war between the two. His grandmother, intent on plumping him up with home cooking, is sure she’ll win him over to her side. His grandfather, meanwhile, surreptitiously schemes to make Thomas his ally. Never mind that Thomas has come, in part, to seek advice over the strained relationship he has with their son, his father. He has his hands full just trying to restore calm to the household. But as he works to negotiate a peace between his grandparents, he finds within himself the possibility to resolve the struggles he faces with his father. With echoes of John Patrick Shanley’s Moonstruck and Joe DiPietro’s Over the River and Through the Woods, GRANDMA SERAFINA’S is as marvelous and memorable a confection as her famous tiramisu.
