New England
Play Description
Subtitled “A Comedy of Trans-Atlantic Manners.” An Englishman and his family live far-flung across the vast American continent. Brought together by tragedy, they find comfort in attacking their adopted country, ridiculing its crude ways and lack of standards. Humour and irony as well as the sense of loss and longing permeate this story of exiles unable to address a world that is passing by.

Press Quotes
“No one writes better than Richard Nelson about Anglo-American relations. [NEW ENGLAND is] a wonderfully explosive Chekhovian tragi-comedy.” —Michael Billington, The Guardian
“A haunting and perceptive play … I suspect this wise, observant and finally compassionate play will linger in the memory for a long time to come.” —Charles Spencer, The Daily Telegraph
“A smart, sharp, acridly funny play … Has an American dramatist ever written an English houseful so deftly? Not in my experience … [Nelson is] at the peak of his form.” —Matt Wolf, Variety
“[Nelson has a] flair for the subtle, needling comedy of culture clash.” —Paul Taylor, The Independent
