    Press Quotes

“Only the waggish adobe theater company could pull off a light, pleasant show in which everybody dies in a hideous car crash. Playwright Jeremy Dobrish crafts a modern fairy tale in this supernatural comic treat. In separate vignettes, each of the three central characters takes us back in time through the events leading up to the aforementioned catastrophe, which is catalyzed by a mysterious magical dog who grants each person what he or she most desires. In the case of seventy-year-old Abe that wish is youth; in that of Cathy, it is to be seen as beautiful in the eyes of her husband; and in that of Jonathan, it is not to be seen at all — to become invisible. In a refreshing twist on a hoary formula, everybody is ecstatic and even fulfilled upon having his or her heart’s longing instantly come true … Dobrish’s highly original script.” —Trav S D, Time Out New York

“It’s a shaggy hound that uncovers the scent of truth in SUPERPOWERS, Jeremy Dobrish’s upside-down mystery. A detective and a uniformed officer try to piece together a car accident in which the driver and two pedestrians, one of them naked, die. This procedural gimmick — the police remaining clueless to the end while the audience discovers what happened — was popular a century ago and is still fun.” —D J R Bruckner, New York Times

    • Jeremy Dobrish

Jeremy Dobrish is a stage director, playwright, artistic leader, and teacher whose main focus has been developing and directing new plays and musicals. As a New York City based director, Jeremy has directed at Second Stage, MCC, Amas, WPA, Joe's Pub, The Westside Arts, The Promenade, The Variety Arts, The Century, Actor's Playhouse, Soho Playhouse, Zipper, etc. His productions have received several Lortel and Drama Desk nominations, and the New York Times has described his directing as "Adroit, Canny, Comic, Funny, Gleeful, Ingenious, and at Double Espresso Speed." Jeremy has directed at all of the major New York festivals, including NYMF, SPF and the Fringe, where his productions have received multiple festival awards including, most recently, the NYMF award for exceptional direction. Regionally, Jeremy has directed at The Old Globe, Barrington Stage, North Shore, The O'Neill, New York Stage and Film, Goodspeed, and The Village Theatre. His adaptation of CURIOUS GEORGE and his productions of THE TEACHER FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, VIRTUALLY ME, and PAUL REVERE tour the country with Theatreworks USA. Jeremy is a seven-time published playwright whose plays have been described by the New York Times as "Delightfully Theatrical, A Gleeful Romp, and Stylishly Daffy." His plays have been produced across the country, and in New York most notably at the Atlantic and Vineyard theatres. Jeremy began his career as the founder and Artistic Director of the aesthetically innovative adobe theatre company which he ran for thirteen years, and where he directed and/or produced over twenty productions. Adobe moved several shows Off-Broadway and was called "One of the canniest theatre companies anywhere in town" by the New York Times who went on to conclude that adobe's work "often seems as crisp as a freshly ironed shirt" due to "acting based on a mathematical precision of detail and a restrained stagecraft." Since adobe, Jeremy has served as an Artistic Associate at Second Stage, and recently he co-founded Midtown Direct Rep, a theatre company in Maplewood, NJ, where he lives, dedicated to bringing the Broadway talents of his community to his community. As a teacher, Jeremy currently serves on the faculty of NYU. He has taught playwriting, directing and acting at Juilliard, The National Theatre Institute, the New York Film Academy, Fordham, Washington Irving High School, and in Prague through Western Michigan University. Jeremy is a member of the Dramatists Guild and SDC. He is represented by Paradigm.

    Play Description

Part murder mystery, part unrequited romance, and part absurdist debacle about the denial and transcendence of death, TRANSATLANTICA tells the story of Dr Reginald Reinhold, whose psychoanalytic session with an eccentric patient, Ilyria (of the land of Ilyria), is interrupted by his wife with news that she is dying. By coincidence, Ilyria too is dying, as is every subsequent visitor to his home — a parade of increasingly eccentric guests. With death dancing at every door, Dr Reinhold is forced to confront his own peculiar relationship with mortality. The setting is the parlor of Dr Reinhold's mansion (festooned with mythical taxidermy and curious artifacts) on the shores of the fantastic continent of Transatlantica, a topsy-turvy world where gardens are planted with cake and lovers grow into trees.

Young attorney Jeremy has been assigned to defend her and asks a Latina colleague, Maritza, to be his translator. But Fatima refuses to talk to anyone but Maritza, and she's enough of a manipulator to get her way. Fatima claims she has been blessed — or cursed — with psychic powers. By merely clasping the hand of an individual, she says, she can immediately grasp everything about him/her including past, future, and innermost secrets. She tells Maritza that her murders were mercy killings: She “read” each of her victims and killed them because they wanted to die. Maritza is first incredulous, then indignant at Fatima's playing God. She firmly resists letting Fatima clasp her hand, but Fatima is persuasive, constantly shifting from pugnacious, foul-mouthed street girl to wise and wily seductress to gentle, compassionate young woman. Maritza finally offers up her hand, yielding her secrets and placing her fate in Fatima's grasp.
